Kidney Biopsy:

A kidney biopsy is a medical procedure that involves taking a small
sample of kidney tissue for examination under a microscope. This test is essential for
diagnosing and understanding various kidney conditions, allowing us to provide personalized
and effective treatment plans. At Dr. Kiran's Renal Center, we use advanced techniques to
ensure accurate results, minimal discomfort, and quick recovery.
Why is a Kidney Biopsy Performed?
A kidney biopsy may be recommended if you have symptoms of kidney disease or if your doctor needs more information to determine the cause of kidney dysfunction. Some common reasons include:
- Unexplained kidney problems or abnormal test results
- Assessment of kidney transplant rejection
- Monitoring the progression of kidney disease
- Evaluating the severity of kidney damage
- Investigating the cause of protein or blood in the urine
The Kidney Biopsy Procedure
The procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis and may take 20-30 minutes. Here’s what you can expect:
Personalized Care at Dr. Kiran’s Renal Center
- Preparation:Before the biopsy, we will review your medical history and may perform a blood test to ensure your blood clotting ability is normal. You will be asked to lie on your back or stomach, depending on the best position for accessing the kidney.
- Local Anesthesia:A local anesthetic will be injected into the skin to numb the area, ensuring that you feel little to no pain during the procedure.
- Needle Insertion:A fine needle will be inserted through the skin and into the kidney. In some cases, ultrasound or CT scans may be used for guidance to ensure the needle reaches the correct location. You may feel some pressure, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated.
- Tissue Sample:The needle will remove a small sample of kidney tissue. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis by a pathologist.
- Recovery:After the biopsy, you will be monitored for a short period to ensure there are no complications. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days.
